Happy New Year

0lindezas
Today is December, 31 and we have the coolest tradition here in Spain, which is eating twelve grapes to the count of the twelve strokes that mark the end of the year. It might seem silly, some sort of superstitious bullcrap, but it is actually one of the few things I do miss when I'm not in Spain.

The moment when you're eating the grapes is the greatest. It's a moment you spend with family and/or friends, there's always the same 80's song on, and you gather in front of the TV (if you're not at the main square or at some party) to listen for the thousandth time to how the whole thing works. It is a moment of sharing, friendship, love and hope. And I say hope in the widest sense it can have. Because you always wish for things to happen in the new year, but you also cling to the mistery: what will this new year bring? Will I be able to start on a clean slate? Will this finally be the year where everything comes together in perfect harmony?

What I like the best is the moment right after, when you kiss and hug everybody in the room, when you share something we all have in common. It makes you feel you are a part of something.

All of this to tell you that this year I've thought we could give a twist to all this. This year, when I'm more aware than ever of all the things I have, when I couldn't be more thankful for how lucky I am, I've thought about something I read months ago. Back then I found it peculiar, but I didn't give it much thought. It's all about wanting things, really want them in order for them to come true, like calling them. And also to be thankful. Everyday give thanks for whatever you think it's worthy to be thankful for.

As this year I'm way too filled with love and gratitude and all, I'm going to wish for something with every grape I eat, but really, really wish for it. The trick is that those wishes can't be for you, but for other people. For example, with the first grape/stroke, I wish for all the people who's gonna spend the night alone to feel my good vibes and the warmth of the love. With the second grape/stroke, I wish for all of those who are sick, to feel better tonight, at least for a while. And so on til twelve. It is not complicated. You don't even have to articulate all that (not even in your head). You just need to picture whatever you want to transmit in your head and send it with all your might.

You may also do it with 'thank-you's', but deeply felt thanks. First grape: I give thanks for all my family. Second grape: I give thanks for all my friends. Third grape: I give thanks for the salesperson at the market down the street, because he always saves the best tangerines for me... I don't know. It's just that it feels like the best time to think about all the people around you, to feel the moment you're living and really see all the love there is in the world, which is there for you to receive and give back, if it may be, multiplied.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY 2010 TO YOU ALL!!

Feliz año nuevo

0lindezas

Choir of Young Believers

0lindezas
I know I recently posted a video by Jeff Hamada about the wonders of living near the snow, that whenever the sun shines on it the world is even prettier than anywhere else. But today I'm posting this other video, also by him, because I looove the song.

The band is called Choir of Young Believers and they're Danish. This song already belongs to my household soundtrack, and will be passed on from generations on end. Enjoy!!

Choir of Young Believers

0lindezas

¡A disfrutar!

Till the end of the day!

0lindezas

'Till the end of the day! from jeff hamada on Vimeo.

Aaaah!! I couldn't believe it when I saw it... the memories!! I've been on those slopes. 'Been there, done that', or so they say. And suddenly, my kinestetic memory has gone to overdrive. For a split second I've felt the cold wind on my face, the googles pressed onto my face, the tension in my legs, the soft crackling sound of the snow underneath the board... total freedom.

I want to go back to the snow, I want to tie the bindings, I want to slide down the slopes. I want. I want. I want.

It's been such a long time I'm starting to think it was just this one time in my life when I did that, for fun, for devotion, for whatever reason. And I miss it and I want to have that part of me back, I want to be that person again, who woke up at times I never wake up to go out to the intense cold, to tie a board to her feet and spend the whole day practising a sport, THE sport. I miss that feeling of being at peace with the world, of that link to nature and to my body, of that tug-of-war with my muscles, with my tendons, with balance. I miss that happiness you feel when you finally manage to pass in between those trees, reacting so fast you no longer think with your brain, but with your feet and your legs and your hips.

And yes, this video has reminded me of all that. Thanks, Jeff Hamada.

¡Hasta el final del día!

0lindezas

'Till the end of the day! from jeff hamada on Vimeo.

Aahhh!! Yo he estado en esas pistas. "Been there, done that", que dicen los anglos.

Gracias, Jeff Hamada.

Band-aids for the heart

1 lindezas
There are times when you realise you've grown as a person and that you've left behing a phase of your life. It's like being a witness to your own History.

My phase has had its own soundtrack, special effects and good amount of props... and I survived. There have been things I haven't been proud of, but that I am already taking into account to prevent them later. In fact, I'll probably learn a great deal from them. And then there have been other things that have helped me to know myself better, to know what I'm willing to do and what I'm capable of. Those things, as of today, make me feel confident and very, very proud of myself. I've fought with other people, with the circumstances and with myself, and I think I've won most of the times. I know I'm flawed, a bit neurotic and somehow paranoid, but I accept myself as I am, I try to mold those things that I like the least about myself and I'm proud to know that the good things I have are very good.

As everybody else, I seek to be a better person and I really think I'm on the good track. These past few months I've talked a lot with myself (not necessarily literally) and I've reached several important conclusions. The first one is that happiness doesn't come if you don't work for it, and that is hard work, and it's not worthy to get stuck on things that make you unhappy only because you think you must do them. The second one is that nobody owns my freedom and I have all the right to exercise it. If somebody else's well-being depends on restricting my freedom, that well-being is not such. I know this is all very easy in theory, but putting it in practice is not so simple, specially because we all have our own habits and neurosis that make this quite complicated half of the times.

From this phase I've come out renewed and almost rejuvenated. I've never felt more energetic, more willing to do things, to push myself, and to revisit things I thought forgotten.

I truly encourage everyone who reads this to analise if they're really happy and as free as they think they should be. Even if it hurts or is complicated, cut with those things that either make you unhappy or less free. I guarantee you will win more than you'll lose. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tiritas para el corazón

2lindezas

On girls being girly

0lindezas
No, I don't like weddings nor "it would be great" to go to anyone else's.
No, I don't like dresses, and it's actually worse when you'll never be able to wear it again.
No, I don't really like to gossip.
No, I don't like shopping, I think it's some kind of modern-time torture.
No, I don't wear high-heels... and I don't understand why anyone would want to.
No, I hardly ever put on makeup, and really, I don't care if I'm too white, too "freckly" or you don't like my short eyelashes.
No, I don't like jewelery, and gold makes you look cheap.

And no, I don't feel bad about any of the above. Not everyone is cut for all that perfectionist crap.

Sobre que las chicas sean femeninas

1 lindezas
No, no me gusta cotillear.

Sarsgaard J. Whiskersson

This cat came into our lives by pure chance in a moment when neither he nor us expected to meet, and now he's become an important part of the family. He has a strong character and demands what he thinks he deserves (he doesn't have a clue). But then he turns into the sweetest and cutest animal you can imagine.

Nesting Instinct

0lindezas
Although the MTWSH is always telling me that my obsession with hanging pictures, changing the room order, and laying coloured fabrics is a nesting instinct and that, before I know I'll be begging him to make me a baby, I've always argued that what I have is an "Ikea instinct"... redecorate your life. That or maybe a little bit of OCD too.

Lately, like for the last three or four years, my redecorating instinct has been kicking really hard, asking me for a radical makeover. Not in the sense of painting the walls in a fucsia pink or changing the chairs in the living room, but more in a selling all that in a garage sale and move to another country kinda way. The destination doesn't matter. I'm not going to say the farther, the better, because my mom would suffer a heart attack, but almost. I want that, a radical makeover. I want the change so bad I am willing to give up the countries with perpetual snow for those with palm trees and beaches. Really. I don't care, I just want to leave.

But then one can't be bothered. You need to look for the place, do all the paperwork so they let you in, save the money to eat while you're there, pack at least a pair of undies and a toothbrush... I mean, so many things. In the rush it can be very exciting. But nah, it passes fast. Then it is just a matter of rutine. It's true that living in another country is always a little bit more exciting, even if it's only because the place is different, the people is different, you don't know anything... and it's an adventure.

But no, what for? why change all that it's taken you so long to gather (furniture, books, dust) for something only because it's exciting? That's so silly.

Instinto anidador

0lindezas

Gardening 101

0lindezas
Even though at first the MTWSM refused having plants in the house (why bring dirt into the house intentionally?), there came a time when I thought it was very sad to have a deserted lounge room, and seeing granny's luscious greenhouse didn't help at all. So we started with one plant (known as "the green plant" for some reason, as if the rest weren't green) and then with another one. That was in the other appartment and only because we didn't have room for anything else. As soon as we moved here, I went crazy. I started buying plants and that's when I learnt the first lesson... don't ever put two plant with different characteristics in the same pot. It sounds like common sense, doesn't it? Well, for a complete illiterate regarding plants, if it has leaves and flowers, it's the same. Why would they need different light patterns? Or water needs? Anyways, in my defense I'll say only those two plants died.
A little while after that, my mom gave me a Swedish ivy plant and told me it needed no specific care, that I could water it whenever I remembered. And it certainly grew beautiful with just a little bit of watering. But then one day it hailed so hard it seemed the sky was going to fall down (the gauls would have fleed in terror) and the poor Swedish ivy ended up with just one stem and half a leaf. Today's still recovering, but little by little it's getting its past lushness back.
And at the end of the summer I bought two hortensias. We've always loved those plants, maybe because they remind us of the north and they make it seem like the air smells like the sea and barbeque sardines, with salt and lemon and... what was I talking about? Oh, yes! Plants.
Thing is this winter is being a little weird, it's raining more than usual in Madrid and even though it's cold, it is not the coldest winter we've ever had. So the hortensia we have in the office window has gotten this beautiful.
It's so nice to see it like that, even if it's from inside... Some experts have suggested we put them inside for the winter or they will die, but I feel they wouldn't be well inside with the heating and dryness when they could be outside, breathing fresh air and having the sunlight directly on them. But oh, well, I call out to all mothers and gardeners of the world. We admit suggestions and advice for total beginners on gardening.

Jardinería I

0lindezas

So much to do, so little time

0lindezas
I've been wanting to post this for some time now, but it's been a crazy couple of months.
Recently, someone said to me that my winters are full of activity and it's true. Maybe it's a sign that I like cold more than heat... or whatever. For the last couple of months I've been taking 3 courses at a time, apart from my normal workload and a few new projects. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad and I can't believe this same thing happens every year. Now I have so many things to do I spend the whole day running around, my legs hurt from going up and down the metro stairs all day, and I feel "half there" most of the time from the lack of sleep. But oh, boy! is it true that when you like something nothing seems to bother you! I'm truly delighted, I'm really liking what I'm doing and on top of that I've managed to get rid of the bad habit of watching TV. Instead, I use that brain-melting time to practise with the violin. And I'm improving quite fast... that's motivation!
Obviously sometimes I get stuck or the exhaustion causes me not to perform as well as I'd like, but even that is teaching me things about myself. It seems incredible that at this point in my life I'm learning more than when I was obliged to. But it also helps that everything is starting to make sense and things are starting to fall into place. I think growing up is not going to be so bad after all.

Mucho que hacer, muy poco tiempo

0lindezas

Yes, we can

0lindezas
In a delirious night, while I stuggled between pain and fever, with a dry mouth and chills going down my back, Obama was elected President.

For an instant I held my breath while he went up that stage in Grand Park, in Chicago, and gave that great speech. He talked about that 106-year-old woman who has seen it all, who has suffered herself having to sit down in the back of a bus, who was both discriminated against because she was a woman and she was black. For her, he said, for her and for all of you we are here tonight. I know you haven't done it for me, you've done it for yourselves, because you were ready for a change. And we will be together in this, I will listen to you, I will be honest with you, and I will be your President too. What a moment! That's why they call it History, in capitals, because if that's happened, if a totally unknown man has made 75% of 223 million people go and vote and believe in a common path, then yes, we can.

But we still have what we have. The same politicians who instead of focusing on what they have to focus on, spend their days throwing bad words at each other like 3rd graders on a school playground. I agree with Max, we also want to dream, we could use an Obama over here too.

Sí, se puede

0lindezas
