La película está producida y escrita por los hermanos Wachowsky, los mismos que escribieron y dirigieron la trilogía de Matrix. Muchos dicen que hay un antes y un después de Matrix, no sólo cinematográficamente hablando, sino como filosofía. Sin querer meterme en lo que hay debajo de la trilogía de Matrix, sí me gustaría hablar del trasfondo de V de Vendetta, donde se nota "su toque".
Para el que no la haya visto y sin pretender reventar nada, diré que se basa en lo que ocurrió el 5 de noviembre de 1605 en Londres, cuando Guy Fawkes intentó volar el parlamento inglés en protesta por el maltrato que recibían los católicos en Inglaterra. Aunque se basa en eso, la historia se desarrolla en un futuro que yo interpreto no muy lejano en el que la escasez de alimentos es un problema y un dictador ha ascendido al poder en Inglaterra. V intenta abrir los ojos a la gente para que se den cuenta de lo que ocurre a su alrededor y hagan algo al respecto. En este caso, Guy Fawkes es una idea inspiradora, un símbolo que toma V para decir a la gente que la destrucción del parlamento sólo sería una forma de rechazo del pueblo a las maneras dictatoriales de sus soberanos.
Me llamó la atención la estética de la campaña electoral del presidente, que se parecía muchísimo a la campaña de Hitler en la Alemania nazi, y ciertas referencias a la política de ese "presidente". Hablan de la cultura del terror, de la implicación del gobierno en un atentado contra la población para poder meterles ese miedo en el cuerpo y que la gente piense que "necesita" al gobierno para protegerse de ese supuesto peligro inminente, de las escuchas que hace el gobierno... hasta hablan de un atentado en un túnel de metro... en Londres.
No sé, la verdad es que si te pones a analizar toda la estética, las referencias, los parecidos, todos los pequeños detalles, puedes sacar una opinión muy clara sobre lo que piensan de su gobierno. Yo nunca he sido fan precisamente del gobierno norteamericano, y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con muchas de las cosas que se leen entre líneas en esta película, aunque también creo que el poder es una cosa muy peligrosa y que te puedes emborrachar con él, haciendo que ser presidente de un país o incluso un triste encargado de supermercado te haga actuar como si acabaras de llegar de un macro-botellón (por eso de que ahora está tan de moda).
Personalmente, creo que lo que diferencia al gobierno norteamericano de cualquier otro gobierno del mundo es que el norteamericano es peligroso, y lo demostraron con creces con la guerra de Irak (sí, sí, pequeños, IraK se escribe con K al final). Se me pusieron los pelos de punta con todo aquello, cuando Ese Señor tan Tonto dijo que se metía en guerra con ese país y no importó lo que hicieran o dijeran los demás, si tenían algo en contra o no, hizo lo que le dio la gana. Eso da mucho miedo. Si a Ese Señor tan Tonto le da por hacer pruebas nucleares en Irán, a ver quién es el guapo que le dice que mire primero en el mapa dónde está, para que no nos toque por error. Seríamos "daños colaterales", seguramente.

We went to watch V for Vendetta the other day. I know it's based on a comic book, but as my comic culture is basically non-existent, I can't say a thing about whether the adaptation was good or not. Even though, I have read some reviews from people who does know the comic book and I understood they, apart from a few minor changes, have kept the whole idea.The film is produced and written by the Wachowsky brothers, the ones who wrote and directed the Matrix trilogy. Many people say there's a before and an after the Matrix trilogy, not only as far as movies are concerned, but as a philosophy. I won't talk here about what lies beneath Matrix, but I would like to say a few things about V for Vendetta, where you can feel their "touch".
For those who haven't seen it, and with no spoilers, I would say it's based on November, 5th 1605, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London as a way to protest against the treatment Catholics received in England back then. Although it's based on that, this story happens in what I think is a near future, in which shortage of food is an acute problem and a dictator has seized power in England. V tries to open people's eyes so they see what's happening around and for them to do something about it. In this case, Guy Fawkes is an inspiring idea, a symbol V takes to tell people that blowing up the Houses of Parliament would only be a way to move against the dictatorial ways of the sovereignty.
I was surprised by the aesthetics of the presidential campaign. It look awfully similar to Hitler's campaign before the nazi Germany, and by some references to the politics of that "president". They talk about the culture of fear. About the participation of the government on a terrorist attack against the people, so they feel fear and they think they "need" the government to protect them from that alleged peril. About the illegal tapping from the government,... they even talk about a terrorist attack in a subway tunnel... in London.
I don't know, if you analise the whole aesthetics, the references, the similarities, every little detail, you can take out their opinion about their own government. Now I'm no fan of the American Government, and I totally agree with a lot of stuff that is said in the movie, but I also think that power is a very dangerous thing. You can intoxicate with it, so being the president of a country or even a sad supermarket manager can make you act as if you were totally wasted (no pun intended).
Personally, I think that the difference between the American government and any other government is that the American is dangerous. They proved it by far with the war in Iraq. It scared the holy living shit outta me when That Stupid Man said he was going to attack Iraq and he didn't care about what the rest of the world did or said, he got in there anyway. That is very scary. If That Stupid Man decides to test his nuclear weapons in Iran, let's see who's the one to tell him to look it up in a map first, just so he doesn't bomb us by mistake. I'm sure we would be "collateral damage".
