30-day Sadhana with Marianne - What comes before

0lindezas
I've been reading Marianne's blog for a few months now. I got to it by pure chance, via Chookooloonks' blog, reading the comments to the superpowers forum. The thing is that I fell in love with the spirit it oozes, with the ideas she has and the way she writes about them.

Marianne, among many other things, is a yoga teacher. And I realized that there comes a moment in everybody's life when they feel the need to know themselves better, to connect with their inner self to a higher level, and to balance that with the rest of their lives. At least, that's what's happening to me. Although a few years ago I was totally skeptical of the possible qualities yoga could have, not too long ago I reconnected with the practice and started to get the gist of it. Clearly, there's a time for everything.

The thing is that Marianne proposed a 30-day sadhana on her blog. Sadhana means commitment, so this sadhana will be the commitment to practice yoga every day for 30 days. It may seem stupid, but I think you need to have -at least- a specific will power and conviction to be able to undertake it.

I feel attracted to it for several reasons. Maybe the first one is because it is a challenge, because I know myself and I know that, even though I can be very determined when I put my mind into it, lately I find it difficult to "keep my focus" or to remember why I started doing something specific. I will also do it because I need to focus, I need to find a balance between what I have inside and what is outside. I hope that balance will help me making sense of things and therefore stop feeling this storm inside of me. Maybe, hopefully, it will also help me figure out why I feel this way.

This sadhana starts on Sunday and this week I have one task, which is the sankalpa. I know, it sounds like I'm speaking Chinese or something. But it is just to find a purpose, why I want to do this sadhana. Sankalpa comes down to a sentence that is your purpose. That way, when I feel my strength flicker o when I lose my focus, I'll be able to remind myself why I started doing it.

Ever since I read about the idea of sankalpa I feel like I can apply it to other aspects of my life and maybe turn it into the first step to recover my centre.

In any case, I have decided to take on a double sadhana. Every day for 30 days I will practice my yoga exercises, and every day for those 30 days, I will post my thoughts about it on this blog, kinda like a journal. So make sure you stop by!

Sadhana de 30 días con Marianne - El previo

0lindezas

Significa amar
y perder y desmoronarte y volver a componerte.

Es lo mejor del mundo. Y a veces, también lo peor.

A veces no tendrás con quién hablar, a veces te preguntarás si
has olvidado quién eres.

Me encanta!!

Happy New Year

0lindezas
Today is December, 31 and we have the coolest tradition here in Spain, which is eating twelve grapes to the count of the twelve strokes that mark the end of the year. It might seem silly, some sort of superstitious bullcrap, but it is actually one of the few things I do miss when I'm not in Spain.

The moment when you're eating the grapes is the greatest. It's a moment you spend with family and/or friends, there's always the same 80's song on, and you gather in front of the TV (if you're not at the main square or at some party) to listen for the thousandth time to how the whole thing works. It is a moment of sharing, friendship, love and hope. And I say hope in the widest sense it can have. Because you always wish for things to happen in the new year, but you also cling to the mistery: what will this new year bring? Will I be able to start on a clean slate? Will this finally be the year where everything comes together in perfect harmony?

What I like the best is the moment right after, when you kiss and hug everybody in the room, when you share something we all have in common. It makes you feel you are a part of something.

All of this to tell you that this year I've thought we could give a twist to all this. This year, when I'm more aware than ever of all the things I have, when I couldn't be more thankful for how lucky I am, I've thought about something I read months ago. Back then I found it peculiar, but I didn't give it much thought. It's all about wanting things, really want them in order for them to come true, like calling them. And also to be thankful. Everyday give thanks for whatever you think it's worthy to be thankful for.

As this year I'm way too filled with love and gratitude and all, I'm going to wish for something with every grape I eat, but really, really wish for it. The trick is that those wishes can't be for you, but for other people. For example, with the first grape/stroke, I wish for all the people who's gonna spend the night alone to feel my good vibes and the warmth of the love. With the second grape/stroke, I wish for all of those who are sick, to feel better tonight, at least for a while. And so on til twelve. It is not complicated. You don't even have to articulate all that (not even in your head). You just need to picture whatever you want to transmit in your head and send it with all your might.

You may also do it with 'thank-you's', but deeply felt thanks. First grape: I give thanks for all my family. Second grape: I give thanks for all my friends. Third grape: I give thanks for the salesperson at the market down the street, because he always saves the best tangerines for me... I don't know. It's just that it feels like the best time to think about all the people around you, to feel the moment you're living and really see all the love there is in the world, which is there for you to receive and give back, if it may be, multiplied.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY 2010 TO YOU ALL!!

Feliz año nuevo

0lindezas

Choir of Young Believers

I know I recently posted a video by Jeff Hamada about the wonders of living near the snow, that whenever the sun shines on it the world is even prettier than anywhere else. But today I'm posting this other video, also by him, because I looove the song.

The band is called Choir of Young Believers and they're Danish. This song already belongs to my household soundtrack, and will be passed on from generations on end. Enjoy!!

Choir of Young Believers

0lindezas

¡A disfrutar!

Till the end of the day!

0lindezas

'Till the end of the day! from jeff hamada on Vimeo.

Aaaah!! I couldn't believe it when I saw it... the memories!! I've been on those slopes. 'Been there, done that', or so they say. And suddenly, my kinestetic memory has gone to overdrive. For a split second I've felt the cold wind on my face, the googles pressed onto my face, the tension in my legs, the soft crackling sound of the snow underneath the board... total freedom.

I want to go back to the snow, I want to tie the bindings, I want to slide down the slopes. I want. I want. I want.

It's been such a long time I'm starting to think it was just this one time in my life when I did that, for fun, for devotion, for whatever reason. And I miss it and I want to have that part of me back, I want to be that person again, who woke up at times I never wake up to go out to the intense cold, to tie a board to her feet and spend the whole day practising a sport, THE sport. I miss that feeling of being at peace with the world, of that link to nature and to my body, of that tug-of-war with my muscles, with my tendons, with balance. I miss that happiness you feel when you finally manage to pass in between those trees, reacting so fast you no longer think with your brain, but with your feet and your legs and your hips.

And yes, this video has reminded me of all that. Thanks, Jeff Hamada.

¡Hasta el final del día!

0lindezas

'Till the end of the day! from jeff hamada on Vimeo.

Aahhh!! Yo he estado en esas pistas. "Been there, done that", que dicen los anglos.

Gracias, Jeff Hamada.

Band-aids for the heart

1 lindezas
There are times when you realise you've grown as a person and that you've left behing a phase of your life. It's like being a witness to your own History.

My phase has had its own soundtrack, special effects and good amount of props... and I survived. There have been things I haven't been proud of, but that I am already taking into account to prevent them later. In fact, I'll probably learn a great deal from them. And then there have been other things that have helped me to know myself better, to know what I'm willing to do and what I'm capable of. Those things, as of today, make me feel confident and very, very proud of myself. I've fought with other people, with the circumstances and with myself, and I think I've won most of the times. I know I'm flawed, a bit neurotic and somehow paranoid, but I accept myself as I am, I try to mold those things that I like the least about myself and I'm proud to know that the good things I have are very good.

As everybody else, I seek to be a better person and I really think I'm on the good track. These past few months I've talked a lot with myself (not necessarily literally) and I've reached several important conclusions. The first one is that happiness doesn't come if you don't work for it, and that is hard work, and it's not worthy to get stuck on things that make you unhappy only because you think you must do them. The second one is that nobody owns my freedom and I have all the right to exercise it. If somebody else's well-being depends on restricting my freedom, that well-being is not such. I know this is all very easy in theory, but putting it in practice is not so simple, specially because we all have our own habits and neurosis that make this quite complicated half of the times.

From this phase I've come out renewed and almost rejuvenated. I've never felt more energetic, more willing to do things, to push myself, and to revisit things I thought forgotten.

I truly encourage everyone who reads this to analise if they're really happy and as free as they think they should be. Even if it hurts or is complicated, cut with those things that either make you unhappy or less free. I guarantee you will win more than you'll lose. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tiritas para el corazón

2lindezas

On girls being girly

No, I don't like weddings nor "it would be great" to go to anyone else's.
No, I don't like dresses, and it's actually worse when you'll never be able to wear it again.
No, I don't really like to gossip.
No, I don't like shopping, I think it's some kind of modern-time torture.
No, I don't wear high-heels... and I don't understand why anyone would want to.
No, I hardly ever put on makeup, and really, I don't care if I'm too white, too "freckly" or you don't like my short eyelashes.
No, I don't like jewelery, and gold makes you look cheap.

And no, I don't feel bad about any of the above. Not everyone is cut for all that perfectionist crap.

Sobre que las chicas sean femeninas

1 lindezas
No, no me gusta cotillear.

Nesting Instinct

0lindezas
Although the MTWSH is always telling me that my obsession with hanging pictures, changing the room order, and laying coloured fabrics is a nesting instinct and that, before I know I'll be begging him to make me a baby, I've always argued that what I have is an "Ikea instinct"... redecorate your life. That or maybe a little bit of OCD too.

Lately, like for the last three or four years, my redecorating instinct has been kicking really hard, asking me for a radical makeover. Not in the sense of painting the walls in a fucsia pink or changing the chairs in the living room, but more in a selling all that in a garage sale and move to another country kinda way. The destination doesn't matter. I'm not going to say the farther, the better, because my mom would suffer a heart attack, but almost. I want that, a radical makeover. I want the change so bad I am willing to give up the countries with perpetual snow for those with palm trees and beaches. Really. I don't care, I just want to leave.

But then one can't be bothered. You need to look for the place, do all the paperwork so they let you in, save the money to eat while you're there, pack at least a pair of undies and a toothbrush... I mean, so many things. In the rush it can be very exciting. But nah, it passes fast. Then it is just a matter of rutine. It's true that living in another country is always a little bit more exciting, even if it's only because the place is different, the people is different, you don't know anything... and it's an adventure.

But no, what for? why change all that it's taken you so long to gather (furniture, books, dust) for something only because it's exciting? That's so silly.

Instinto anidador

0lindezas

Gardening 101

0lindezas
Even though at first the MTWSM refused having plants in the house (why bring dirt into the house intentionally?), there came a time when I thought it was very sad to have a deserted lounge room, and seeing granny's luscious greenhouse didn't help at all. So we started with one plant (known as "the green plant" for some reason, as if the rest weren't green) and then with another one. That was in the other appartment and only because we didn't have room for anything else. As soon as we moved here, I went crazy. I started buying plants and that's when I learnt the first lesson... don't ever put two plant with different characteristics in the same pot. It sounds like common sense, doesn't it? Well, for a complete illiterate regarding plants, if it has leaves and flowers, it's the same. Why would they need different light patterns? Or water needs? Anyways, in my defense I'll say only those two plants died.
A little while after that, my mom gave me a Swedish ivy plant and told me it needed no specific care, that I could water it whenever I remembered. And it certainly grew beautiful with just a little bit of watering. But then one day it hailed so hard it seemed the sky was going to fall down (the gauls would have fleed in terror) and the poor Swedish ivy ended up with just one stem and half a leaf. Today's still recovering, but little by little it's getting its past lushness back.
And at the end of the summer I bought two hortensias. We've always loved those plants, maybe because they remind us of the north and they make it seem like the air smells like the sea and barbeque sardines, with salt and lemon and... what was I talking about? Oh, yes! Plants.
Thing is this winter is being a little weird, it's raining more than usual in Madrid and even though it's cold, it is not the coldest winter we've ever had. So the hortensia we have in the office window has gotten this beautiful.
It's so nice to see it like that, even if it's from inside... Some experts have suggested we put them inside for the winter or they will die, but I feel they wouldn't be well inside with the heating and dryness when they could be outside, breathing fresh air and having the sunlight directly on them. But oh, well, I call out to all mothers and gardeners of the world. We admit suggestions and advice for total beginners on gardening.

So much to do, so little time

0lindezas
I've been wanting to post this for some time now, but it's been a crazy couple of months.
Recently, someone said to me that my winters are full of activity and it's true. Maybe it's a sign that I like cold more than heat... or whatever. For the last couple of months I've been taking 3 courses at a time, apart from my normal workload and a few new projects. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad and I can't believe this same thing happens every year. Now I have so many things to do I spend the whole day running around, my legs hurt from going up and down the metro stairs all day, and I feel "half there" most of the time from the lack of sleep. But oh, boy! is it true that when you like something nothing seems to bother you! I'm truly delighted, I'm really liking what I'm doing and on top of that I've managed to get rid of the bad habit of watching TV. Instead, I use that brain-melting time to practise with the violin. And I'm improving quite fast... that's motivation!
Obviously sometimes I get stuck or the exhaustion causes me not to perform as well as I'd like, but even that is teaching me things about myself. It seems incredible that at this point in my life I'm learning more than when I was obliged to. But it also helps that everything is starting to make sense and things are starting to fall into place. I think growing up is not going to be so bad after all.

Mucho que hacer, muy poco tiempo

0lindezas

Yes, we can

0lindezas
In a delirious night, while I stuggled between pain and fever, with a dry mouth and chills going down my back, Obama was elected President.

For an instant I held my breath while he went up that stage in Grand Park, in Chicago, and gave that great speech. He talked about that 106-year-old woman who has seen it all, who has suffered herself having to sit down in the back of a bus, who was both discriminated against because she was a woman and she was black. For her, he said, for her and for all of you we are here tonight. I know you haven't done it for me, you've done it for yourselves, because you were ready for a change. And we will be together in this, I will listen to you, I will be honest with you, and I will be your President too. What a moment! That's why they call it History, in capitals, because if that's happened, if a totally unknown man has made 75% of 223 million people go and vote and believe in a common path, then yes, we can.

But we still have what we have. The same politicians who instead of focusing on what they have to focus on, spend their days throwing bad words at each other like 3rd graders on a school playground. I agree with Max, we also want to dream, we could use an Obama over here too.

Sí, se puede

0lindezas

On the United States

0lindezas
We have to admit, as bad as we feel about it, that maybe the American domination of the world is real. Not because they're more powerful, or have more freedom, or are more democratic or anything like that. But because we're more afraid of them.
I still get chills down my spine when I remember that fateful day when Mister Bush decided to invade Irak, whether we liked it or not. But the worst thing is not that he totally ignored the international opinion, but that he had the face to threat us saying "if you agree, you're our friend. If not, you're automatically signed on the Axis of Evil and, if while I invade Irak a bomb happens to fall in your garden... well, you should have thought of that before".
Anyways. One of the things that make me think the States have more power than anyone else is because we all "follow" their elections. You tell me when we have so extensely covered the Russian, Chinese, or almost even the Spanish elections. Here we all know who the candidates are (at least that one is white and old, and the other one is black, skinny and has this really weird name), who have they chosen as their running mates, when will the elections be, that one of them has had to win his candidacy fighting against Hilary Clinton... I mean, we know much more than what we should know about an election that is not ours and in which we cannot participate. Why would that be? some will wonder. Well, really because it does affect the rest of the world the kind of president they have in the States. Indeed. Look how good it's been to have Mister Bush. Now soldiers all around the world have died in Irak or Afghanistan, we all pay through the nose for our gas, and bury our faces in our hands when we see the last appearance of Mister Bush on TV (can he really speak?).
Well, as a citizen of the world that I am, I'm worried about who's going to be the next president of the United States and, if Obama wins, whom many people compares to JFK, I worry he might have the same ending.
The States have had better and worse presidents, like anywhere else, but with Mister Bush they've gone through so much stuff that many people has taken upon themselves to ask people to vote. One of the strangest things is their voting system. It's obvious that with such a huge country our centralised registration system wouldn't work there. It is already chaotic here, so... But what's more surprising for me is the fact that they have to register before each election. If not, you can't vote. Apparently there are a few states that have the "Election Day Registration" option so people go and vote (if that day they wake up and decide to get out of the house), but it's only in 8 states out of 50. Anyways, because of this "if you don't register, you don't vote" thing, a few actors have launched a campaign so people doesn't forget o directly passes on it.

Sobre Estados Unidos

0lindezas

¿No sueno política? ¡Mira qué rápido aprendo!

On growing up

0lindezas
I know I've been procrastinating for too long to tell how was my trip to Canada, and I think it's about time to talk about it.
Briefly I'll say I went to Montréal for two months and I took a few trips out of town while I was there. Montréal is not a especially beautiful city, but it has its charm and there were a few neighbourhoods I never got tired to walk about. The general atmosphere is indeed different from what I saw the other time I went to Canada (right at the other end of the country, in British Columbia). But maybe that has something to do with the fact that in Québec they're half french, and that really has to affect you somehow.
Québec city is really beautiful and the surroundings are incredibly lush and great. I have only been twice to the States and each time it was just for a few hours, so I guess that's the immensity feeling people talk about when they cross the country. Unbelievably big open spaces that look almost infinite and that make you feel very, very small and at the same time connected to the earth.
One of the things that shocked me the most was to learn that shortly after I was in Québec city, the Manége burnt down. It was one of the oldest military buildings, where soldiers used to train when they were sent to Canada in the 1600s. In fact, it was one of the first buildings settlers built when they arrived... so sad!
Anyways, I think the most important thing about my stay in Montréal is all the people I met and what I learnt from them.
The first without a doubt has to be my "host mom". What a... peculiar woman! Thanks to her way of talking, almost screaming and mixing English and French in the same sentence, she got me to understand perfectly the Québecois accent. We both talk a lot, so we didn't have any problems communicating, whatever it was the language. At the beginning I was surprised. After a while, I couldn't understand why I hadn't lived in a bilingual atmosphere all my life... it felt so natural!
Then there were all the people from the school. In the two months I spent there, on the first one I went to French school, and on the second one, I worked in a multilingual radio station.
Well, so the people from the school were pretty fantastic. At first I thought I was gonna be bored with the classes and all, but then I had the greatest time and I was a little sad when the whole class thing ended. My morning teacher was the coolest guy ever. All the girls in school were crazy about him, but he played tough all the time. He taught me French is not so bad, and that you can be a language teacher and not bore to death all your students. Then, my afternoon teacher was a very sweet guy. He was a little older than the other one, but we had an instant connection. He taught me a lot (and I mean A LOT) of French in just a month. And the greatest thing of all, he encouraged me enough so I felt comfortable enough to go around talking to people in French 24 hours after my arrival!! That's awesome, if you ask me. And then, well, all my friends from school. Great people even with the age difference and all, and I think friends forever.
But my month at the school got to an end and I started working. Obviously it was a different situation, but we ended up being a pretty tight gang and I had a great time. My boss taught me a lot of stuff, including conversational French Québecois. He had this really strong Québecois accent and... AND he had some teeth missing. My first week there I thought I would never understand this guy, and he must have thought I was retarded or something. That Friday I went home after work and all the way I couldn't stop thinking what was I going to do? I couldn't understand my boss, I couldn't do the job (one thing is to translate from whatever to Spanish, but translating from whatever to French is totally different) and I was the only Spaniard there so... what could I do? Should I quit? Should I tell the people from school so they can find me another job? By the end of the weekend I had decided I was not going to chicken out. I was there to learn French and if that's what it was going to take, then be it! And that's how, at the end of the two months, I spoke better French than any of my friends and had no problems at all understanding the weird accent they have (for those of you that don't beleive me and understand a little French, watch this and tell me if their accent is or isn't weird as hell).
So yeah, maybe the first step to this incredible learning experience started with me making the decision of going and of not letting my stuborness get in the way of learning a completely normal language. Of course it wasn't a simple decision: I went almost as far as you can go from France to learn French. It wasn't a coincidence. I am really sorry, but even my teachers (both from France) admitted French people have a... special personality. I decided to open to a language that I had always hated, and I'm very happy I did. It's not that French has become my favourite language all of sudden, not at all, but at least I read and listen to French every day without wanting to kill, kill, KILL!
And oh, yeah! This new trip has renovated my wish to migrate to cooler lands... say, Canada!
In other post I'll tell you about those trips I took and about snow... ah, snow!

Sobre hacerse mayor

0lindezas

I must admit this is a new low for me. I haven't written anything in... too long.
So for no reason at all, I'm posting the last achievement of the cat. He's learnt how to hop onto the shower screen and he'd stay there for hours on end looking out the bathroom window. Yesterday, he stayed up there for 20 minutes while the MWWSH showered. As soon as it's not a blow dryer, he's good.

Well, soon more and better.

Buff!

0lindezas
Buff! I haven't written anything in years and sticking to my theme, this post is not going to be long.
Sticking to my theme too, work keeps me busy all day long, filling my head with 'I'll do this today and that, I'll leave it for tomorrow cause this thing here is more urgent...' Well, priorities.
Anyhow, not only from work lives the man (or the woman), so I make my intensive work sessions more enjoyable with musics of the world. My latest acquisition has been the Panic! in the Room album (Pretty Odd). It's a very pop British band. I found it funny when I listened to the whole cd cause it's taken me to two moments in my life. The first one, me and my friend Rosy listening to The Beatles. And the second one, to the music my aunt used to listen to when she was young and rebellious and she felt traumatised cause she had turned 25... 25! YEARS! OLD!
But yeah, it's one of those great things music does, with just a few notes it can remind you of things you thought long forgotten or make you think about things you never thought possible.
I'll leave you to the link to their website. The website is not the greatest thing in the world, but you'll be able to watch some videos. Although the very nice people from Fueled by Ramen, the record company, have restricted by country some of the videos they've uploaded to YouTube. Therefore, you might find yourselves with a very rude 'this video is not available in your country'... how discriminatory! But oh well, it's not the end of the world, people.
Enjoy, it's already Friday. Cheers!

Buff!

0lindezas
Buff!
¡Salud!

Blog update

0lindezas
Well, I can say at last that "La memoria de las flores" is completely in Spanish. To read all the posts in English, you'll have to click on the "In English" icon. Or, in this case, if you wanna read it in Spanish, you'll have to click on the "In Spanish" button. The blog tries to be the exact same version as in Spanish, but right now I'm having some technical difficulties with the template and I can't get it to look like I want it to. I'll keep working on it and I hope you'll soon be able to enjoy the same thing but double. And who knows? Maybe one day, when I don't have anything better to do or when I'm bored to death, I'll make the French, Japanese, German and Portuguese version... or not.

Ah! Warning, I haven't upload all the entries to this version, so don't look around too much... hehe.

Actualización bloguera

0lindezas

I need you, more than you'll ever know
I still do... I'm willing to let it show.
I need a minute just to get to you,
I feel like I might be getting through
Come over and say nothing,
Silence is everything.

This belongs to an Aly & A.J. song, from the Insomniatic album. For some reason, I cannot get it out of my head lately. I can't stop humming this verse and it's almost as if it talked to me. It's funny how there are still times, after all these years with myself, in which I surprise myself and find out new things about me. I'm growing up.

Me estoy haciendo mayor.

Today Arthur C. Clarke has passed away.
My idyll with science-fiction started a few years ago now, but it seems like it's always been a part of me.
Books have always been present in my life. My parents are mostly the ones to blame, obviously; especially my dad, who's an avid reader. There's always been bookshelves full of all kinds of books in my house, from comic books to cook books, all through epic novels. Since I was little, my parents have encouraged me to read and, believe it or not, to look up stuff in the dictionary. Maybe my utter and total obsession with books in general and dictionaries in particular comes from there.
There's something special in that almost ritual moment of starting a new book. Something fabulous in picking up your reading, where it almost feels like you're meeting old friends. It feels like you're getting out of your daily world, all plain and boring, and getting in a whole new world where everything's possible. I love the smell of books, the noise of the passing pages, the smooth feeling of the edge of the pages... I love reading.
My dad has always been a big fan of science-fiction, but I never felt attracted to that kind of literature. Maybe because of my young age, I thought science-fiction was all about an incredibly big boring-ass story about scientists and their jibby-jabba... And boy, was I ever right! And I love it sooo much! Cause it's nothing like a jibby-jabba at all.
Why do I tell you that Arthur C. Clarke has died? Cause the first science-fiction book I ever read was written by him. He was my very own gatekeeper of the wonderful world science-fiction has been for me. I've never stopped reading it. In fact, some of my all-time favourite books, those that you recommend everyone, are science-fiction.
Me, a natural-born skeptic; me, who loses her faith in human kind everytime I watch the news; me, I find a fantastic shelter in those imaginary worlds, in those true tests humans are subjected to when they encounter beings from another planet, in that definitive form of humility when Man has to admit he doesn't know nor can do everything.
So today, when a myth has died and one of the pillars of the bookshelf that holds up my world colapses, I encourage you to read some science-fiction. I started with "Rendezvous with Rama", but there are a lot of great books by this wonderful author, like "The Songs of Distant Earth", that are so worth reading at least once in a lifetime.

Libros y cosas

0lindezas
Me encanta leer.
¡Y cómo me gusta!
